CAPE2015 Aircraft Temperature Comparisons

Objectives

With the CAPE 2015 project, we wanted to compare the temperatures that the Citation II research aircraft recorded to temperatures recorded by radiosonde balloons launched from the site of the Mid-Course Doppler Radar (MCR) at Cape Canaveral, Florida and COAMPS model soundings for the MCR site. Our hypothesis was that the aircraft, balloon, and model soundings would agree more at higher altitudes.

By: Alexa Otto

Edited: July 26, 2017

Setting up for Calibration

1. Perform a leak test on the CCNC by using a hand vacuum set to 10 psi. If leaks are present, check the entire instrument for loose screws and fix leaks appropriately.

“During my time in Hallet's lab I was working on a basic version of an experiment to study e-induced aggregation. I used a chest freezer with temps of around -20 to -25 C, filling it with a droplet cloud generated from an ultrasonic nebulizer and nucleating crystal growth with dry ice.
CPC Time Adjustment

Explanation

Using CPlot to compare various concentrations measured by different instrumentation for the Saudi Spring09 flight data (as shown in Fig. 1), it was noted that there were similar patterns in spikes from the instrumentation. From this observation, it was concluded that due to the design of the CPC there is a time lag to data collection compared to the other instruments (PCASP and FSSP). Using CPlot to compare the spikes from the CPC, FSSP, and PCASP; the time lag …

Objectives

The purpose of this research is be able to safely test flares in the lab and determine their effectiveness. Ultimately, tests will be conducted at Michigan Technological University in their Pi Cloud Chamber.

Setup

The first step was to design and create the apparatus for the testing system. Below is the diagram of the lab setup for the testing. We used two blowers (Worx WG520) to simulate the speed of an aircraft.

Explanation of Data

The idea of using radio occultations to obtain atmospheric profiles is a relatively new research endeavor. Several missions have taken place throughout the last decade to obtain GPS occultation soundings: GPS/Meteorology (GPS/MET), Satelite de Aplicaciones Cientificas-C (SAC-C), Challenging Mini Payload Satellite (CHAMP), Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites Polar System-Global Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding (EPS-GRAS), and Constellation Observing …

On board the T28 aircraft was a Hail Spectrometer and High Volume Particle Spectrometer (HVPS). Both probes output 2D data, and the Hail Spectrometer also output 1D data. The HVPS had an array of 256 diodes, the Hail Spectrometer had 126/64 diodes for 1D/2D data. If image elements were blocked above a certain threshold a particle(s) would be counted. The steps to use these counts to calculate particle concentration (#/m^4) are detailed below.
