Data Skills Pathway Student-Mentor Workspace

This workspace is used by Data Skills Pathway students, mentors, and instructors to organize project work, weekly progress, useful links, tools, references, and student deliverables.

Each student should use their individual workspace page to document progress, share updates, track project tasks, and organize useful resources related to their project.

Main Workspace Pages

Purpose of the Student-Mentor Workspace

The Student-Mentor Workspace helps students:

  • Organize their project information.
  • Track weekly progress.
  • Document data, methods, figures, scripts, papers, and results.
  • Keep useful links, tools, and references in one place.
  • Communicate clearly with mentors and instructors.
  • Prepare final project updates, reports, posters, or presentations.

Students should update their workspace regularly during the semester.

What Each Student Workspace Should Include

Each student page should include:

  • Student name and major.
  • Mentor name.
  • Project title or project interest area.
  • Learning goals.
  • Project question or problem.
  • Data sources.
  • Tools used.
  • Weekly progress updates.
  • Figures, tables, scripts, notebooks, or outputs.
  • Papers, references, and Zotero / Google Scholar notes.
  • Questions or blockers.
  • Final project product and next steps.

Useful Tools

  • Google Scholar: for finding scientific papers.
  • Zotero: for saving papers and creating a bibliography.
  • Python: for data analysis and scripting.
  • Jupyter Notebook: for interactive coding and documentation.
  • Excel or CSV tools: for basic data review and cleaning.
  • GitHub or GitLab: for code sharing and version control, if used by the mentor.
  • Atmos Wiki: for documenting project progress and linking outputs.

Notes for Students

The workspace does not need to be perfect at the beginning. Start simple and update it as your project develops.

Each week, try to document:

  • What you completed.
  • What you learned.
  • What question or blocker you have.
  • What you plan to do next.
  • Any figure, script, paper, dataset, or result you worked on.
