POLCAST4 Aircraft Log
July 2, 2012 - Two aircraft flights (3.23 hrs, no flares, no cases) were conducted. Conditions were very hazy with high CCN concentrations. During the first flight, there was an upper (> 11,000 ft base) layer of clouds with no convection below. Only a few small cumulus clouds located in front of the high cloud layer. During the second flight, there was a well developed convective cloud with a rain shaft, there were feeders developing on the west side but nothing that was not directly connected with the main cell. Small (~1000 ft) cumulus clouds developed along an outflow from the large system but nothing that was seedable. The high CCN condensation observed on this day may make it an interesting day for studying how CCN concentration affect convection development.
