LiDAR/3D Scanner

A LiDAR or 3D scanner is employed to generate a three-dimensional model of instruments, structures, or the body within specialized software. This model is utilized to conduct simulations, among other applications.

Pre-scanning checklist

  1. System requirements:
    • Know the system requirements. Before setting up the LiDAR scanner, make sure your computer meets the minimum processor and graphics card requirements needed to run the scanner software.
  2. Connection with device :
    • Connecting with laptop (RECOMMENDED): To connect to a laptop, use the cables provided with the scanners.
    • Connecting with phone : (1) The scanner and phone should be connected to the same WiFi. (2) Visit the scanner's application to verify the connection with the device.

Before scanning

  1. Choose a New Project
  2. Check Camera setting/exposure :
    • Open live camera view before scanning
    • Exposure indicator :
      • Green = Proper exposure.
      • Red = Lost track of exposure (Proceed to the location where the scanning process was halted.).
      • Adjust lighting if needed for the settings.
  3. Tracking Method :
    • Geometry Mode :
      1. Uses the object's shape for tracking.
      2. Recommended for objects with little surface texture.
    • Texture Mode:
      1. Relies on visible surface patterns.
      2. Better for highly textured objects.

Scanning Technique

  1. Maintain approx. 60 cm of distance between the scanner and the object.
  2. Avoid moving too close because it reduces tracking quality.
  3. Moving too far away leads to higher chances of losing tracking performance.
  4. The recommended scanning technique is to scan the object from multiple angles.
  5. Avoid quick or jerky motions, as it will lead to losing track of the motion.
  6. Continuously move around the object instead of making sudden direction changes.
  7. The scanner builds a 3D map while moving, so smooth motion helps maintain tracking.

Anchoring Points

Begin scanning from a distinctive point. For example, for scanning the 2D-S instrument, scan from the top-semispherical part.

Good anchor points :

If Tracking Lost(SLIP)

To Recover:

  1. Return to previously scanned area
  2. Move slowly until tracking resumes
  3. Continue scanning from that location.

IR Reflective Markers

If tracking repeatedly fails:

  1. Apply IR reflective marker stickers around the object.
  2. Switch the tracking mode from Point Cloud to Global Marker.
  3. Markers provide additional reference points for the scanner.

Saving the scan

  1. If the scan contains major slipping or distortion, discard it and rescan.
  2. Save scans only when the object has been reconstructed correctly.
