Many workstation computers in the department are setup to use static IP network addresses. A static IP address allow computers to have a convenient name that can be used when remotely accessing the system using ssh and vnc. There are a limited number of static IP addresses so user should request a static IP address from a member of the IT committee (David Delene, Gretchen Mullendore, Mark Askerlson) instead of going directly to the Scientific Computer Center. We are working on setting up dynamic DHCP to work on Linux system to eliminate the need for most static IP addresses.
